Science Fair Prizes and Scholarship

Exciting SCIENCE FAIR news!  We have prizes and scholarships to announce!

1. The CLASS WITH THE MOST PARTICIPANTS (based on completed projects) will receive an ant farm and related books!

2. Mad Science is sponsoring Trace by awarding the SCIENCE FAIR WINNER a free spot in their upcoming after-school science program.

The Mad Science class will be Wednesdays 22/3-17/5, 2:40 – 3:40 PM.  The winner will unfortunately miss the first session but will join for the rest of the classes.

3. The PTO is sponsoring a NEEDS/ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT based SCHOLARSHIP to the same Mad Science class for another student.  Scholarship applications are open to all the science fair participants – teachers will hand them out with the confirmation forms and handbooks later this week.

(If you’re not participating in the science fair but want your child to be considered for the scholarship – please leave a letter addressed to “VP Academic Affairs” in the PTO mailbox with the student name, teacher/grade and justification for why this child deserves the scholarship.)

Please submit the scholarship application by Feb 28th – to the PTO mailbox!

  • The science fair winner will be chosen by the judges.  If the winner can not attend the class, the prize will go to 2nd/3rd place winner and then to one of the scholarship applicants.
  • The scholarship recipients will be chosen by PTO Board with input from administration/select teachers. The winner will be notified in early March.

Questions?  Please contact Pia, the Trace PTO VP of Academic Affairs, by writing academics@tracepto.com.

The 2017 Trace Science Fair!

science-fairThe annual science fair will be held at 6:30pm Thursday, March 23rd.  We invite ALL students to participate!

The primary purpose of the Trace Science Fair is to foster a love of science.  We want this to be a positive experience for all students, so all students will get a 1st, 2nd or 3rd place ribbon.  In addition, all students will receive a small participation prize (gift card).  We will also award a classroom prize for the class with highest number of participants!

What is a Science Fair?

The Trace Science Fair is a one night event where students get to present the work they’ve done on a science project.  It is a culmination of what may be many weeks of work depending on the nature of the project.  (Recommendation: Plan ahead & start early!)

The presentation consists of a poster (on a PTO provided poster board) that explains the project and a chat with a judge.  The poster should explain the project fully and give a title, hypothesis, materials, procedure, results, conclusion and bibliography.  (The poster components may vary depending on the project type.  Please make sure to always include a bibliography to show where students learnt about the project! The source can be an online resource also.)

The science fair judges will talk to the students about their project and ask questions about the method, methodology and findings. Please support your student by talking to them about their project, this will help them prepare talking to the judges.  By talking about the project, you will also help your child truly understand and learn from the project.

The students choose  what they want to work on.  The handbook lists several websites with ideas for projects. For our science fair we’ll have 5 types of projects:

  • Collections (open to K-2)
  • Demonstrations (open to K-3)
  • Models
  • Experiments
  • Inventions

For more details, see the Trace Science Fair Handbook.  Available in English or en Español.

For more information, see NASA’s explanation of a science fair and the scientific method. Estos documentos también están disponibles en español en el mismo sitio web.

  1. ASAP: Pick a project and get working on it!
Projects can be done individually or in groups of 2-3 students.
  2. Jan 27 – Return registration form to your classroom teacher.Science Fair Registration FormIf you don’t need a print out of the handbook (see handbook) please note that on the form so we can save on printing costs.
  3. Week of Jan 30: Confirmation forms will be sent to registered students the week of Jan 30 (to finalize the number of boards needed).
  4. Feb 16: Students who confirm they are doing a science project will be given a tri-fold standing board to display their project. The board will include a space number to guide set-up the day of the science fair.
  5. March 23: Science Fair Projects need to be delivered to the Multi-Purpose Room by 8:30 AM.
  6. March 23: Science Fair, 6:30pm. Students should arrive by 6:20pm for a group picture.
All students who have created a display board are encouraged to attend, present their project to the judges, and be eligible for a prize!
  7. March 24: Don’t forget to pick up your project if you didn’t bring it home at the end of the fair.
